An estimated one million people, mostly Muslim minorities, are being held in detention centers across Xinjiang region in China. The repression against the Turkic minorities started in late 2016. People may be held for studying Islam and praying, having family members who live abroad, or for no apparent reason at all.
Passports are confiscated from Uighurs and Kazakhs; denied permission to leave Xinjiang and detained in huge numbers. Although China persists these are “vocational education centers”, numerous studies and reports say they are harsh internment camps.
